All dogs within the City of Yellowknife, over the age of six months, must be licensed, in accordance with the Dog By-law No. 4755. Dog licences need to be renewed annually.
Dog licences may be purchased or renewed at the following places:
- City Hall (at the Municipal Enforcement office)
- Great Slave Animal Hospital
Requirements to Licence a Dog
In order to obtain a dog licence or renewal you must:
- be at least 18 years of age.
- provide the name, breed, colour and sex of the dog to be licensed.
- show proof from a veterinarian certifying that the dog to be licensed has a current rabies vaccination.
To save time, you can fill out the application form, prior to attending City Hall or Great Slave Animal Hospital.

Persons with disabilities who require the assistance of a certified guide dog are exempt from paying a licence fee. However, the guide dog must still be registered with the City of Yellowknife.
