2026-2036 Climate Action Plan
The City of Yellowknife is currently working on its 2026-2036 Climate Action Plan, with a focus on climate change mitigation and adaptation. To ensure this plan is reflective of community knowledge and needs, we are engaging the public, businesses, stakeholders, First Nations governments, the Government of the Northwest Territories, local groups, and NGOs.
What have we done so far?
From January to March 2025, the City engaged with residents, local organizations, businesses, utilities providers, the GNWT, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, and City staff from other departments

As part of the preparation for the Climate Action Plan, the City contracted Stantec Consulting Ltd. to complete an Energy and GHG Emissions Inventory as well as a Climate Vulnerability Assessment.
What's next?
The City of Yellowknife invites residents to share their feedback on some of the draft actions for the Climate Action Plan 2026-2036 during two upcoming engagement events: an in-person roundtable discussion and a survey. Feedback gathered through these engagements will help the City assess whether the proposed actions align with community priorities and identify any necessary adjustments.
Your feedback is highly valued and will help shape the direction of Yellowknife’s Climate Action Plan. Please consider participating online or in-person.
Public roundtable
Join the City of Yellowknife for the upcoming public roundtable on the Climate Action Plan 2026-2036 on Wednesday, June 25th from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Council Chamber at City Hall (4807 - 52 Street, Yellowknife, NT). Get a first-hand look at some of the draft actions and hear directly from the City’s Planning team. This is your chance to better understand what is being proposed, ask questions, how you can participate, and share any concerns or suggestions in-person.
Light refreshments will be provided. Please note that media may be present. If you prefer not to be filmed or photographed, let us know at the door. No registration is required.
Online survey
From June 18 to July 4, 2025, the City encourages residents, businesses, and organizations to share their input on a selection of draft actions for the 2026–2036 Climate Action Plan via an online survey. The survey covers the same topics as the roundtable, allowing you to choose the engagement option that works best for you. Participants must create a free PlaceSpeak account to confirm residency in Yellowknife and help ensure input is coming from our community.
Past Plans and Policies
The Corporate and Community Energy Action Plan 2015-2025 (CCEAP) helped chart the course towards an energy smart Yellowknife that aimed to reduce the city's GHG emissions, its heating costs, dependence on fossil fuels and impact on global climate change.
In 2009, the City commissioned MetroQuest to create the City of Yellowknife’s 50-year Vision to guide growth and development.
The City first began energy planning through our 2006-2014 Community Energy Plan that set targets for the period of 2004 to 2014.
