Municipal Enforcement Officers issue a variety of tickets when necessary to gain compliance with applicable by-laws and legislation. Municipal Enforcement Officers are recognized as peace officers in accordance with the Criminal Code of Canada and the Summary Convictions Procedures Act when acting in their official capacity.
Officers issue a Penalty Notice (parking ticket) for any parking by-law offences and Summary Offence Ticket Informations (SOTI or more commonly known as a ticket) for any type of moving violation or other infraction under the various by-laws.
Officers may also issue a Compliance Notice when circumstances warrant. A Compliance Notice provides a specific amount of time to allow people to provide documentation or become compliant with applicable by-laws and legislation, in order to have their ticket cancelled.
What You Can Do if You Get a Ticket
When people are issued a Penalty Notice, the may choose to pay the parking ticket or choose to contest the parking ticket through the Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS).
When people are issued a SOTI, they have several options for dealing with that ticket. if you get a ticket you may:
- pay the ticket online, by phone, or in person at City Hall,
- request information about your ticket including any disclosure (evidence) prior to or at the court date,
- attend court to plead not guilty and challenge your ticket,
- attend court to plead guilty and speak to the Justice of the Peace about sentencing (fine amount) and circumstances,
- if attending court, please follow the instructions on the ticket or summons, including your court date and time.
