The Municipal Enforcement Division has taken steps to move to more of a community minded approach to enforcement and the downtown core is no exception. Officers are present and engaged in the downtown core in a problem solving and community policing capacity. Municipal Enforcement also uses our activity and engagement in the downtown core as a way to support and participate in reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, since many members of the downtown and underhoused population have been directly effected by the residential school system in Canada in one way or another. Our officers come from diverse backgrounds, cultures and nationalities, including officers of Indigenous heritage. This allows us to use our collective and combined experiences to support the work we do.
Public safety and engagement is a priority for Municipal Enforcement, especially downtown. Officers achieve this through conducting foot patrols downtown, engaging and speaking with members of the downtown population and by helping people when necessary and connecting people with the appropriate resources such as Street Outreach (Safe Ride) and helping people get to the various shelters. Officers also intervene when necessary, to maintain public safety. We also work with our community safety partners such as the Yellowknife Fire Division and the RCMP.
