Yellowknife is a city surrounded by natural beauty and resources.
Our prosperity has long been dependent on this setting since the first settlements in the region. While we want to keep developing the natural resources that have marked our history, we also want to work and live in a city that is vibrant, healthy and secure.
For that reason, Yellowknife has developed programs and plans to preserve our environment and help ensure that it remains a fulfilling place to live.

Environmental Concerns
Please note that the City of Yellowknife is not the ultimate authority on environmental issues on land within the City. Please contact the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Government of the Northwest Territories, for questions about wildlife, spills, air pollution, environmental laws, etc. They are the primary resource for environmental monitoring and enforcement as per the Environmental Protection Act.
The Health Effects Monitoring Program ensures that remediation activities planned to take place at Giant Mine, located in Yellowknife, will not have a negative impact on people's health. For more information, visit the YK Health Effects Monitoring Program website.
